Sharon Church Teaching

TEACHING

As a teacher, Sharon has been intimately involved with the development of a nationally recognized Crafts program at The University of the Arts for the past thirty years. Crafts at UArts is distinguished by a cross–disciplinary, conceptually–based studio curriculum that is called “Projects”. Through a sequence of coursework students in all media make work that responds to a variety of contemporary craft issues.

Within this structure, Sharon has extended her purview to a range of disciplines, which, in turn, has impacted her own studio activities. As a jeweler, she also teaches a variety of courses within the Jewelry/Metals Program: Introductory and Advanced Jewelry and Metalsmithing, Art for the Body, Jewelry Casting and Jewelry Rendering and Design. Throughout, her search for jewelry form flows seamlessly from the studio to the classroom and back again.

In all of her endeavors, the body is considered a central physical and psychic entity, a potent site with limitless expressive potential. She is joined in a constantly evolving search for personal, meaningful and wearable form.
